![]() Modern Holstein Cows of International Standing On June 18, the German Holstein Show 2009 took place in Oldenburg. More than 230 Holsteins and Red Holsteins faced up to the decisions of judges Markus Mock and Martin Biederbick. They both confirmed the markedly high quality level at the well-attended show. The captivating program as well included a very informative progeny showcase with 15 daughter groups on display.
‘We’ve rarely seen animals of such a good quality throughout at a German National Show. The show contingent definitely was of international standing,’ was the statement of the 2 judges. They easily agreed on Stormatic daughter Krista of Jörg Seeger and Windlooper Holsteins as Grand Champion. ‘That cow has everything we expect from a modern Holstein cow,’ comments Markus Mock. ‘Moreover, she has the best udder of the show.’
Heifer classes: Success for German genetics In the heifer classes, ZS E Mail exhibited by Thomas Wiethege of Halver was victorious. Sired by Ticket and out of a Jedstar dam, she represented German genetics. E Mail displayed somewhat more power and width than Goldwyn daughter DRH Esprit of Dietmar Richter, Hinte, who captivated with an exceptionally lively and beautifully veined udder and claimed Reserve.
With the young cows, the Champion and the Reserve Champion award went to 2 cows that stood 1st and 2nd in the same class. Excelling by a lot of natural dairyness, Goldwyn daughter Lys Adia of Agrargenossenschaft Heinichen-Pappendorf was the clear winner. Owned by Volker Carstens of Visselhövede, first crop daughter Mona (Lindgren) came in 2nd.
High tension in the intermediate classes Climax of the show was the judging of the 3rd and 4th calver classes that came up with a tremendous density of animal quality. In that category’s 1st class already, with his enthusiastic comment Markus Mock left no room for doubt that Champion daughter Bessy of Johannes Hempen, Wippingen, would have a say in the final line-up. The same goes for the winner of the next class, Krista, owned by Jörg Seeger and Windlooper Holsteins. The judge made no secret of the fact just how enthusiastic he was about both Krista and Bessy. When it comes to udder quality, to him Krista was more than a match for Bessy who impressed with her massive body. In addition Krista excelled by her extremely harmonious and balanced body, and in no respect she looked extreme despite her very dairy appearance. The old cow classes were an impressive sight. Here, the title went to Starleader daughter Eke Lesta of Hein Ekenhorst, Hesterkante, while KSK Hawai, sired by Juote and owned by Rainer Ahrens of Midlum, claimed Reserve.
Red Holsteins: A wide-ranging top flight Judged by Martin Biederbick, the Red Holstein competition excelled by a wide-ranging top flight in terms of quality. With the heifers, the slightly wider and stronger Talent daughter Clara of Hatke & Cloppenburg, Bösel, prevailed over Tiana, a very fine and youthful Joyboy daughter with outstanding feet & legs. At the DHV-Genetik sale organized on the eve of the show, her breeder, Friedrich Köster, had sold her for €5,000 to Gerhard Fassnacht of Horb.
With the Red Holsteins, too, the closest decision was made in the intermediate classes. This was the category where RH Maxima competed. As a heifer already, that Talent daughter owned by the Maxima syndicate has claimed numerous awards. Since she has calved at the end of May only, she was not yet in her optimal condition. Even so, the judge gave preference to her over the almost perfectly uddered Rustler daughter Hazia, owned by Gerhard Fassnacht of Horb. He justified that decision with Maxima’s powerful body and her advantages regarding locomotion.
The old cows competed in one class, with the Champion and Reserve accordingly being made up of that class. With Dunja (Faber), Lor (Lentini), and Feuer (Cadon), 3 highly decorated show divas fought out the decision between themselves. The Champion title went to Dunja of Milchhof Wesenberg, who convinced through her optimal condition throughout. Especially due to Dunja’s bloom to the udder, Lor, who was significantly longer in milk already, had to be content with Reserve honors. She is owned by Herwig and Sven Friedrichs of Großenkneten.
Very informative progeny showcase Other than in the years before, the progeny showcase was not organized after but during the show. With 15 daughter groups on display, this turned out to be a real organizational challenge, however, it was handled well and rewarded through the big interest of the audience. In addition to the future bulls Aspen, Elite, Mirror, Radon, Rainman, Tilo, and Vincente, that lined up without or with just preliminary proofs, the current top sires Cassano, Ruacana, Sallas, and Zabing presented themselves. Moreover, Emil II, Janos, Jetlag, and Ludox proved their transmitting qualities with second-crop daughters. The audience chose the Cassanos as the best progeny group, that clearly lead over the daughters of Janos and Emil II.
