Type classification
Linear assessment
A functional body constitutes the basis for high production over several lactations. In Germany, the linear assessment as part of the conformation assessment of the sires’ progeny is in use for many years. Classifiers assess 19 linear traits (18 standard traits as "hock quality"). The classifiers are working in compliance with the international regulations and are regularly trained and examined by the German Holstein Association (DHV). A regular data monitoring guarantees the compliance with the guidelines provided by the DHV. The recorded conformation data are analyzed centrally. Proofs are calculated for all linear single traits as well as for the composites dairy character, body, feet and legs, and udders.Cow classification
The conformation of the cows is assessed by a 100-points-system through the combination of the four composites dairy character, body, feet and legs, and udders. For each composite, scores from 65 points to a maximum of 99 points are possible. With weights of 10% for dairy character, 20% for body, 30% for feet and legs and 40% for udders, the combination of these four scores results in a conformation score of between 65 points and a maximum of 99 points.First calvers can achieve a maximum of 88 points for each trait, and for second calvers, the ceiling is 90 points. Only from the third calving on, there is no further limit. Cows that are assessed with 90 and more points receive the rating ”Excellent". Currently, in Germany, the highest score is EX-97.
